Great drums: Does Size Matter?

Of course, there are many types of drums in the world. Snare drums and bongos, and Bodhrans ashikos, timpani and tenor drums if you want to learn to play this instrument, you have many choices. But what if you want to go for raw power? What if you want play with the big boys and, incidentally, the big drum? What are your best options then? Fortunately for the drummer who thinks that potential size, there are several contenders in the category Drum and each demand respect in accordance with their sizes.

First, The most obvious of the bass drums, the bass drum. This is a large drum that produces a note a small step or permanent. Some odaiko drums are so great that when they were placed in their permanent homes, usually a temple or a shrine, they are never moved again. They are sometimes made from a single piece of wood from an old tree: the “N” odaiko drum for example, is made from a tree that was 1200 years old when killed. The instrument measures nearly eight feet in diameter. The notes of the odaiko are deep, resonant and unforgettable.
